STYLING YOUR CLIPHAIR EXTENSIONS
HOW TO STORE YOUR CLIP IN HAIR EXTENSIONS
You can use your hairdryer, straighteners and curling tongs on your hair extensions to achieve a variety of styles, but remember, as with all human hair, the less heat used the better. In order to keep your extensions in their original silky condition for as long as possible, it's advisable to use a good quality heat protection treatment before applying heat to your hair extensions.
You may find that your hair extensions respond to heat tools much quicker than your own hair, making them easy and fast to style. Be sure not to apply heat tools to your extensions for long periods of time. It's also advisable not to use hair spray, mousse or gel as this can melt into the hair and also to avoid a build up. Treat your extensions as you would your own hair in order to keep them looking soft and shiny. Remember to use a heat protector before any heating appliances are used on the hair.
WASHING YOUR CLIPHAIR EXTENSIONS
HOW TO STORE YOUR CLIP IN HAIR EXTENSIONS
It shouldn't be necessary to clean your hair extensions more than every 6 weeks.
- Firstly, mix half a cup of lukewarm water with a teaspoon of shampoo. The more moisturising the shampoo, the better.
- Secondly, fill your sink or a large bowl with warm water and mix the cup of diluted shampoo into the water. Keep top weft and clips out of water (this avoids swelling of the top weft and the clips going rusty). Make sure your extensions are tangle free and place them into the sink or bowl. Then swirl around your hair gently.
- Next, remove the extensions from the solution and rinse them under a running tap, holding the extensions at the top, near the clips. Cold water is best to lock in moisture.
- Squeezing out any excess water and avoiding tangling the hair, lay the extensions out flat on a towel. Apply a conditioning treatment to the extensions, such as an intensive repair treatment. Comb through from ends to weft using a wide tooth comb. Gently fold over the towel and leave for one hour to allow the conditioner to penetrate the hair.
- Rinse the conditioner out and apply a leave in conditioner. You can apply more than you would usually on your own hair. In a fresh towel, lie your extensions flat and fold the towel over them, as before. Leave the extensions to dry naturally. If you're in a hurry, leaving them in an airing cupboard or by a radiator can speed up the process.
- Once your extensions have dried, you can comb through gently from clip to tip, before applying heat protection spray and straightening one weft at a time.
DYING OR COLOURING EXTENSIONS
We have over 60 colors in our range and we offer FREE COLOUR EXCHANGES. Before choosing your hair extensions, we would encourage you to use our Colour Matching Service to get a good colour match and we can also send you samples. Always try to get a good colour match from available colours. We don't encourage dyeing the extensions, if you do however have to dye them please follow the instructions below.
- It's recommended to buy a shade closest to your own hair colour, but the extensions can be dyed up to two shades darker. The hair has already been through a chemical process, so bleaching or lightening the hair can affect the condition of the hair.
- You will need two boxes of dye per full head set of hair extensions. Do not rub or tangle the hair, simply apply the dye in a patting and stroking motion from root to tip. The hair can be dyed more than once, but remember, like your own hair, the condition will be affected the more you dye the extensions. Always follow the instructions and thoroughly rinse the dye from the extensions. Read through the above instructions on cleaning your extensions for when it comes to washing the dye from the hair.
- Always carry out a strand test before dyeing whole hair extensions. Dyeing hair extensions requires professional experience. Once hair has been dyed we cannot be held responsible for the dyeing process.
STORING YOUR HAIR EXTENSIONS
- DO NOT store your hair extensions in plastic packaging!
- Close clips after removal of your hair.
- Brush hair through from top weft to ends, supporting the top weft.
- Spray your extensions with leave-in conditioner.
- Store in cotton or breathable material.
THINGS TO AVOID
- Don't use products which contain alcohol.
- These can dry out the extensions and make them brittle and weak.
- Don't wear your extensions to swim in, this will tangle them and dry them out.
- Be sure to take your extensions out before going to bed, carefully clip by clip to avoid damaging your own hair.
- Don't bleach or lighten your extensions.
Clip Ins, Ponytails & Fringes
Brushing
ALWAYS brush your extensions before applying them, before washing them and after you take them out.
Only use an extension safe hairbrush like The Wet One by Cliphair Detangling brush. Brushes with bobbled ends or very fine teeth can catch the seams of the hair extensions causing hair fallout.
When brushing your extensions, work from the ends upwards, holding the hair firmly above where you are brushing to avoid pulling the seams.
NEVER brush your hair extensions whilst they are wet. This puts too much tension on the seams and can cause them to break.
When brushing your extensions, work from the ends upwards, holding the hair firmly above where you are brushing to avoid pulling the seams.
Washing
Try to only wash your hair extensions every 12-14 uses unless they desperately need washing in between. The less you wash them the longer they will last!
ONLY use Cliphair’s extensions safe Shampoo & Conditioner. Alcohol and Sulphates are harmful to hair extensions as they strip the hair of its natural oils. Use only Sulphate free products like our Deep Moisture range.
ALWAYS brush your extensions before washing them to prevent matting. If they are very knotty after washing you should detangle them gently before drying with an extensions friendly hairbrush suitable for wet hair such as The Wet One by Cliphair.
ALWAYS use a conditioner after the shampoo to add moisture back into the hair.
USE a deep conditioning hair mask on your clip-ins if they are feeling dry, damaged or dehydrated. This will breathe new life back into you’re hair extensions and restore moisture.
Drying & Styling
Like most suppliers, we do not permanently straighten our human hair extensions as it reduces the quality and styling possibilities, it also has a less natural finish. All of our hair after washing will dry with a natural, loose wave if not styled. With some quick and basic styling, the hair will easily return to its silky, smooth state. As all of our extensions are made from 100% human hair, they can be straightened, curled, blow-dried or styled in any way you like! Heres our top tips for safe styling…
ALWAYS use a heat protection spray on the hair before using any heated tools such as tongs, straighteners, wavers, hair dryers or heated rollers. This will protect the hair from the heat and prevent any damage.
USE heatless alternatives when possible, to reduce the amount of heat on the hair. Braids and soft rollers are perfect for creating heatless curls!
AFTER washing your hair extensions its best to let them dry naturally if you have the time. You can do this by hanging them up in a warm area. Once the hair is dry you can then style as you wish feeling great that you’ve minimised the use of heat!
180-190 is the max temperature you should be using on hair extensions to avoid any damage or breakage.
If you need your extensions to dry quickly, apply heat protection spray and dry them with a hairdryer on a low heat.
Storage & Usage
NEVER store hair extensions next to a window or in direct sunlight as this could damage the hair.
NEVER sleep or swim with your hair extensions attached. Clip-Ins and Hair pieces are designed for occasional use and are not suitable for sleeping/swimming/gym.
Keep the clips shut whilst you are storing the hair to avoid any matting/tangles.
Use your hair extensions box to store the hair when it is not being used. Lay the hair as flat as possible and always brush before storing.
Dying & Toning
Human hair extensions can be dyed or toned however this does lessen the quality and reduce the lifespan of the product. As the hair has been removed from its natural root it no longer receives the vital nutrients and oils it needs to remain healthy and strong. Dying and toning can weaken the hair further so for this reason we advise against dying or toning the hair if possible. Once the hair has been dyed or toned this voids the returns policy. This applies to all dyes and toners, including toning/purple shampoos and pigmented conditioners. If you still decide to colour the hair, follow our advice below…
NEVER bleach or lighten any hair extensions. If you need to dye the hair you should only go darker, never lighter as this will seriously damage the extensions.
TEST a small section before dying the hair all over to check the colour is how you expect. Extensions are coated during manufacturing to prolong the lifespan; this can affect how colours take to the hair.
When using a toning shampoo on hair extensions it's best to do it as a colour bath to dilute the strength. Fill a sink with lukewarm water and add a few drops of the toning shampoo, mix well then soak the extensions for the recommended time.
Remember, we have over 60 colours to choose from in our collection and a free colour match service to help you find the right shade, so chances are you won't need to dye the hair after all.
Professional, Permanent Hair Extensions

AFTER washing your permanent hair extensions it's best to completely dry the roots to prevent any build up or irritation.
180-190 is the max temperature you should be using on hair extensions to avoid any damage or breakage.
Maintenance & Usage
NEVER sleep with wet hair extensions. This can cause serious matting at the roots and ends which can damage your own hair.
NEVER apply permanent hair extensions yourself onto your own hair. We advise only ever having a qualified extensionist apply your hair for the safest and best results.
ALWAYS attend your maintenance appointments. All types of hair extensions will need repositioning or replacing after 6-8 weeks of wear, skipping these appointments can cause damage to your own hair and the hair extensions.
Loosely braid your hair whilst you sleep to prevent any knotting or matting forming.
Sleeping on a silk pillowcase is better for your hair and hair extensions as it is softer than cotton. When you move in your sleep your hair rubs against the surface of your pillow, having a soft material like silk reduces the friction.
