Christmas can be a tough time for many, and whilst some are flaunting gorgeous hairstyles and long, thick tresses, a lot of women struggle with thinning hair and hair loss. Alopecia UK was born in 2004 to help people cope with these issues by offering support to those who suffer from this condition, raising awareness to the general public and devolving donations to fund research in the UK.
1. What Is Alopecia?
Alopecia is the technical term for hair loss, a condition that can affect just your scalp or extend to your entire body. Depending on the cause and severity of the condition, the resulting hair loss can be either temporary or permanent. There are many possible culprits that can be the underlying cause of baldness: medications, hormonal changes, and genetics are the major ones, but not many know that factors such as stress and tight hairstyles like braids and ponytails can result in hair loss too.
Alopecia isn’t harmful to one’s health per se, but it’s a condition that can have serious repercussions on self-esteem and mental health. Baldness dramatically changes the way your natural features are perceived, and this can have a huge impact on how you look at yourself too. People that suffer from alopecia are often struggling in finding a way to feel beautiful and confident.
2. How Can You Help?
If you’d like to get involved, there are different ways for you to participate in the fight against alopecia and support the community of people struggling with patch hair loss and baldness.
Donate
Alopecia UK offers you the chance to make either a one-off donation (you can select one of the three preset amounts, or manually insert how much you’d like to give), or to sign up for monthly contributions that can be as small as £3 per month. What does this do? The money is used to fund the charity and can either be devolved to research, used to cover the expenses of training volunteers and support groups, or to fund events aimed to boost and support self-confidence in children and young people struggling with alopecia.

3. This 2023, Take On A Challenge…
Running for charity is a fun and supportive way to keep fit, meet new people and raise funds and awareness at the same time. If you’re up for a challenge, sign up to one of the ten available spots for Alopecia UK charity places in the Great North Run, a half marathon that will be run on Sunday the 10th of September 2023 in Tyne and Wear. In order to cover the costs of the spots held by Alopecia UK, the charity requires a sign-up fee of £30 and a pledge to raise a minimum of £250 for the charity – so make sure you let the world know about your efforts and commitment!
4. Conclusion:
Whether you’re a hair enthusiast wishing to make an act of kindness towards a charity organisation, or you or a loved one are affected by this condition, consider donating to Alopecia UK to help those struggling with hair loss: any type of contribution makes a difference!
